Last week, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei publicly drew a line in the sand with the US military, insisting that its AI models may not be used for mass surveillance of Americans or deadly autonomous weapons.

The move infuriated officials at the Pentagon. Defense secretary Pete Hegseth came out in full force, accusing Anthropic of trying to “seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military” and banning the company from ever doing any business with any US government entity, “effective immediately.”

President Donald Trump ordered agencies to “immediately cease” using Anthropic’s technology on Friday, while simultaneously claiming that the tool will be phased out of all government work over the next six months. The Pentagon has officially labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk, mandating that defense partners certify they do not use Claude. This stems from CEO Dario Amodei's refusal to allow the military to use its models for mass surveillance of Americans or fully autonomous weapons. Amodei also reportedly criticized OpenAI's defense contract as "safety theater."

OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.4, its most capable frontier model to date. Available in "Thinking" and "Pro" modes, its headline feature is native computer-use capabilities via Codex and the API, enabling it to autonomously click, type, and navigate software for multi-step workflows. The release also includes ChatGPT for Excel in beta. The model reportedly outperforms humans on desktop tasks and 83% of job-specific evaluations.

Jack Dorsey's Block Inc. announced the layoff of 4,000 employees, nearly half the company, with Dorsey explaining that "intelligence tools we’re creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working." Following this announcement, Block's stock jumped 24% in after-hours trading, reflecting Wall Street's positive reaction to AI-driven efficiency and reduced workforce.

Google showcased a new "delegative interface" paradigm for AI on phones, exemplified by Gemini Automation. Instead of a chat window, users hand Gemini a goal (e.g., "figure out what the group wants for dinner and order it"), and it autonomously navigates multiple apps and steps to complete the task, significantly reducing app-switching and user effort. This represents a major shift from traditional chatbot interactions.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang indicated that the company might not make further private investments in leading AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic.
